Before, during and after an earthquake

Learning and practising protective actions beforehand can help you avoid panicked decisions.

Before · Make preparedness routine

  • Secure furniture, keep exits clear and make a household plan.
  • Practise protective actions at home, school and work.
  • Seek qualified assessment of structural safety. Securing contents does not replace building assessment.

During · If you are inside

  • Drop, Cover and Hold On: protect your head and neck; take cover under a sturdy nearby table where possible and hold on.
  • Stay away from glass and unsecured furniture.
  • Do not rush towards stairs or exits during shaking; do not use lifts or jump from balconies or windows.

During · If you are outside

  • Stay in an open area away from façades, walls, power lines and structures that could fall.
  • At the coast, follow tsunami alerts and authorities’ instructions to move away from the shoreline after shaking.

After · Safety and reliable information

  • Check your own safety first; once shaking stops, use a safe exit and follow authorities’ instructions.
  • Do not enter damaged buildings; aftershocks may occur.
  • For life-threatening emergencies in Türkiye, call 112 and clearly state your location, the event and visible hazards.
  • Keep access clear for responders. Coordinate help through authorised services and stay within your training.
  • Avoid spreading unverified reports or earthquake-time predictions. Check the source and date.
