Review room by room

Furniture and storage

Use suitable fixings and safe installation support to secure large furniture and shelves. Store heavy objects lower down and review items that might fall near beds.

Routes and exits

Keep corridors and doorways clear. Plan access to a torch and sturdy footwear at night. Discuss safe exits from different rooms.

Utilities and fire risks

Learn safe utility shut-off procedures from competent people. Do not attempt repairs when a fault or leak is suspected; contact the relevant service from a safe location.

Building safety

Appearance, number of floors or a home checklist cannot certify structural safety. Learn about assessment through competent professionals and authorised bodies.

Neighbours and accessibility

Review stairs, entrances and shared spaces together. With their agreement, plan accessible support for neighbours who may need assistance.

One step I will complete today

Choose one risk, identify a safe solution and write the completion date in your family plan. Review it together at the next check.
